FAQ about classes

What are classes in ESO, and why do they matter?
In ESO, your class is the foundation of your character. It gives you unique skill lines and abilities that shape your combat style – from summoning fiery beasts to turning invisible or healing your allies. But don’t worry – classes are just one piece of the puzzle!
How many classes are available in ESO?
As of now, there are seven classes in ESO: Dragonknight, Templar, Sorcerer, Nightblade, Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist. Each comes with its own flair and flavor, just like the drinks in my tavern.
Can I change my class later in the game?
Nope, once you pick a class, that’s your fate. Mosts folks just create a new character if they want to play another class. Thanks to XP events, scrolls, potions and the daily extra XP for dungeons and battlegrounds, it doesn’t take long to reach level 50 at all.
Which class is best for beginners?
That depends on your style, but Templar and Dragonknight are both great beginner-friendly choices. They’re strong, tough, and have simple rotations. Even I learned the ropes with a Templar, but you can choose pretty much any class to learn the game.
Do classes determine what weapons or armor I can use?

Nope! In ESO, every class can use any weapon or armor. Want to be a Sorcerer with a greatsword or a Dragonknight with a bow? Go for it. Your class gives you skills – but your gear and build make the magic happen.

Can every class heal, tank, and deal damage?

Aye! Every class is flexible enough to play all three roles – though some are naturally better at certain ones. It all depends on how you build your character. ESO’s like a stew: mix the right ingredients, and it works!

Do I need to buy any DLC to unlock specific classes?
Yes – some classes are locked behind DLC or Chapters.

  • Warden: Crown Store
  • Necromancer: Elsweyr Chapter or Crown Store
  • Arcanist: Necrom Chapter or Crown Store

The others (Dragonknight, Templar, Sorcerer, Nightblade) are available to all players from the start.

Which class is the strongest in PvE/PvP right now?
This one is hard to answer, because Balance shifts like the winds in Windhelm. All classes are viable and it hardly depends on the kind of content you wanna play. You can clear all content with any class, if you know what you’re doing (and keep your mug full).
How do I pick the right class for my playstyle?

Ask yourself: Do I want to burn things? Heal friends? Sneak and strike? Pick the one that excites you most – every class has multiple ways to shine. And you’ll have more fun when you love your playstyle.

Are some classes better for solo play than others?

Yes – some classes have more self-healing and survivability. Dragonknights, Templars, and Arcanists are excellent for soloing. But with the right build, any class can tackle content on their own.

Does race affect which class I should pick?

Only slightly. Races give small passive bonuses – handy, but not game-changing. Pick what you like best. A stylish Orc Sorcerer is just as deadly as an optimized Dark Elf.

Can I play the same class in different roles, like a healer or a tank?

Absolutely. Your class gives you tools – but your gear, skills, and Champion Points define your role. A Dragonknight can be a fearsome tank, a brutal damage dealer, or even a fiery healer (with effort and some extra spice).
